Everyone’s first reaction was “Your doing what?”, when we told them we were giving up our positions at work and moving onto a boat. We weren’t going to be “normal” anymore, but instead live our lives and work as needed. We’re not going to just work everyday for our 2 weeks off.
But no matter how crazy people thought we were, we still moved on the boat. Would we do it any different after a few years of living on a boat? Nope, not at all.
Why we do it? We’re tired of the rat-race. We were tired of working just to pay bills going to work, fighting traffic then coming home eating dinner in front of the television. On weekends we would clean, cut grass, do home maintenance then Monday it was back to the same routine. Do you konw how boring that can be? We dreamed that one day we could spend the weekends on a boat, or an RV doing what we wanted and no stress.
Did we get exercise daily? No, unless it was a commercial break. We were in our 40′s and 50+ pounds overweight and going no where…. Our kids were raised, it was only going to be us. We knew that if we didn’t make a change that we would never be healthy enough to enjoy our retirement. We were both on medication for stress due to our jobs, and working ourselves into an early grave just to make some company rich. We weren’t the ones getting the millions of dollars from the company. So we made some drastic changes.
We sold the house paid off our bills, quit our jobs, gave our children our possessions that they wanted then had a yard sale!
We moved onto a 36 foot boat, Just the 2 of us and our dog. (who doesn’t really understand WHY we left our perfectly good home for this). Do we regret it? NO not at all. We love it.
Finding a boat was the hardest part. We knew we wanted to pay cash, so a brand new boat was out of the question. We bought our boat from EBay from an older couple who owned the boat since it was new. It was in great condition and in our price range. It was the perfect boat to live on, play on, and take on long trips. And it was paid for.
What didn’t we bring from the house? The TV. We do have a small TV that is hardly ever on, and we are making it with that. We don’t spend time inside much, we’re out on deck or walking, actually talking to our neighbors. We lived in our previous home 12 years, I never even knew the neighbor’s last name. How sad is that . Now we know our neighbors, because we all sit outside at night and talk while the sun goes down.
When the weather changes we move off the boat and into the RV and go west to drier and warmer climates some years, some years we go further South. During the winter months we work regular jobs to earn money, and with everything paid for we can save allot of money to enjoy life.
Read more to see how you can start enjoying life and only work a few months of the year and play during the months that you want.
You may think why the name RVBOATLIFE.com? Well basically you are in a small space with both things, a boat and an RV, and living your life while working very litte.
Hi there just came across your site today and i like it.
Our thinking appears to be the same as yours and we are going to sell up our house to live full time in a motorhome .
Apart from renting a house out we are not interested in living in bricks and mortar again.
I like the idea of having a canal boat too like you guys do,although i know nothing about canal boats i think a holiday first would be the way for us to go first,i am not sure my wife would be a keen boater and i cant even swim well. lol
I would love to know more about this lifestyle and if you store your r.v and costs of living on a boat and how do you store the canal boat when traveling in your r.v
Id love to hear from you
